The stone used in this piece is from the Morenci mine of Arizona and is regarded as producing finest turquoise to have ever been uncovered and some of the first to be produced for the open market. Known for it's variety of colour and bedrock matrix, the colour tends to have a light blue colour deepening to a dark blue for some higher grade stones and is highly sought after. The black pyrite matrix tends to be irregular, which when polished shines silver to black, though there are some very rare quartz matrix patterns which are ultimately desirable because of the mines depletion.
