Sun Surf Union Supply Palaka Jacket Navy

Sun Surf Union Supply Palaka Jacket Navy

The Union Supply Jacket from Sun Surf is a classic piece and falls under the newly introduced 'Barbara Collection', inspired by legend Barbara Kawakami, who was born in Japan in 1921 and whose family emigrated to Hawaii when she was three years old. She worked in textiles her whole life and became a leading voice on Japanese Immigrant clothing, publishing the book 'Japanese Immigrant Clothing in Hawaii 1885-1941'.

Favoured by Hawaiian plantation workers in the early 1800s, the 'Palaka' (transliterated from 'Frock') originated when British and American sailors arrived in the Sandwich Islands.  Wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved jackets produced in cheap checked cloth, the native's name altered from describing the jacket to becoming a descriptor of the fabric's pattern instead.

Made from a coarsely woven 9.5oz plain-weave cotton using indigo yarn, Kawakami has closely supervised the production to as closely emulate the earliest Palaka example in the Sun Surf archive. The simple construction makes this item is exceedingly easy to wear as a layering piece, or lightweight shirt jacket perfect for summer.

The Palaka itself is steeped in the history of the migrant workers who emigrated to Hawaii to farm the sugar plantations and is seen as the "proto-Hawaiian Shirt" pattern. For more info read our blog on the 'Colourful History of Hawaiian Shirts'
